Apple’s AirPods are built with the best sound quality in mind, and I know this from long use of Apple EarPods before going for the wireless AirPods.
The sound quality of your AirPods can get lower with time, and this is common with almost all Apple earphones. If you have new AirPods that are giving you issues with the sound quality, then there is definitely something wrong somewhere.
Why Do My AirPods Sound So Low? If you have increased the volume of your AirPods and it still sounds lower with reduced quality, then you can turn off settings like Volume Limit, Sound Check, and the equalizer from your iPhone’s settings.
Turning off Low Power Mode, re-pairing the AirPods, and cleaning the speakers are other possibilities to solve your AirPods’ volume issues.
In the next section, I’ll be going into detail on how to fix it when your AirPods sound so low using these methods mentioned above.
Troubleshooting AirPods Sound Issues
These solutions will work for all models like AirPods 1st and 2nd Gen, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.
Turn Off the Equalizer
The equalizer (EQ) feature on the iPhone allows you to change the way music sounds, and most of the time, this can cause volume issues on your AirPods.
Here’s how to turn off the equalizer option in iPhone settings.
- First, open the Settings app and tap on Music.
- Next, tap EQ and select Off.
- Turn off Volume Limit and Sound Check.
Turn Off Sound Check and Volume Limit
The sound check feature of the iPhone, iPod, and other devices allows you to play all of your songs at roughly the same volume, without considering the original volume of the song.
The Volume Limit feature lets you limit how loud your music will play on your earbuds or headphones.
Both of these features can have a huge impact on your sound output, which can cause the sound to be lower for certain music.
Here’s how to turn off Volume Limit and Sound Check on an iPhone.
- First, go to the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Next, scroll down and tap Music.
- Scroll to Sound Check and turn it off.
- Finally, turn off the volume limit if the option is available.
Turn off Low Power Mode
If you have enabled the Low Power Mode on your Apple device, this might be the cause of the lower volume on your AirPods. The low power mode can reduce the maximum volume output.
You can turn off this option from the Battery section of the iPhone Settings app.
Re-pair the AirPods
Un-pairing your AirPods from your device and re-pairing them might fix the volume issues if you’re still having this problem after adjusting the settings above.
- First, open the Settings app and tap Bluetooth.
- Next, tap on the (i) icon next to the connected AirPods.
- Tap Forget This Device, and then confirm your selection.
- Now, restart your iPhone while the AirPods are in their charging case.
- Finally, once your iPhone is on, take out the AirPods from the case and pair them again.
Clean your AirPods
The sound quality of your AirPods can get lower if the speaker openings on the AirPods are covered with ear wax or dirt.
The only way to fix it if this is the cause is to clean the AirPods with a soft cloth and a soft brush. If you don’t have a brush, you can use a toothpick to gently remove the dirt and then use a soft cloth to wipe it off.
My AirPods still sound too low. What can I do?
First, you should make sure they are fully charged, and secondly, turn up the volume on the iPhone.
If your iPhone volume is at maximum and the issue still persists after following the solutions above, it is likely that your AirPods are damaged.
These troubleshooting tips should fix the sound issues on your AirPods, and if you have old AirPods that do not show signs of improvement even after following all the above solutions, then you might just have to get a new one.
